Highway Department
Welcome to the home page for the Harrison County Highway Department
and Engineer's Office. Historic Harrison County is located in Scenic
Southern Indiana along the Ohio River just west of Louisville, Kentucky.
Harrison County is a predominantly rural county, but is growing quickly due
in part to our proximity to the Louisville Metro area.
The first road was built in the county in 1809 connecting Corydon with
Mauckport Kentucky on the Ohio River. A tow and ferry line was operated in
Mauckport bringing settlers into the county from Kentucky. This road and
ferry greatly expanded the county's economic viability and ease of access to
the outside world which lead to a rapid settlement of the area.
Among the first settlers in what is now Harrison County were Daniel Boone
and his brothers, most notably Squire Boone. Squire Boone settled
permanently in what is now Boone Township in 1806. He is buried in a cave
near his former home, at Squire Boone Caverns.
The Highway Department continues to strive to provide the citizens of
Harrison County the best transportation system possible. We hope that you
