Highway Department
Welcome to the home page for the Harrison County Highway Department
and Engineer's Office, located in historic Corydon, Indiana. Harrison County
is located in Scenic Southern Indiana along the Ohio River just west of
Louisville, Kentucky. Harrison County is predominantly rural, but continues
annual growth due in part to our proximity of the Louisville Metro area.
The first road was built in the county in 1809 connecting Corydon with
Mauckport on the bank of the Ohio River. A towboat and ferry line was
operated there bringing pioneers across from Brandenburg, Kentucky. The
road and ferry greatly expanded the county's economic viability and ease of
access from the Ohio River, which lead to a rapid settlement of the area.
Among the first settlers in what is now Harrison County, were Daniel Boone
and his brothers; most notably Squire Boone. Squire Boone settled
permanently in what is now Boone Township in 1806. He is interred in a cave
near his former home, at Squire Boone Caverns.
The Highway Department strives to provide the citizens and visitors of
Harrison County the best transportation system possible. We hope that you
find our website useful and informative. Please feel free to contact us with
